Yu ZHANG Yu ZHANG from Frick's lab will present his project entitled
'Pathophysiology of information processing in neocortical dendrites in Fragile X Syndrome'
Fragile X Syndrome (FXS) is the most common form of inherited mental retardation syndrome, and it is caused by a silencing mutation of the gene Fmr1 (encoding the protein FMRP). In humans, the consequences of this disorder include hypersensitivity to sensory stimuli, autistic behavior, seizures, and learning and memory deficits. Channelopathies have not been addressed as a prominent feature of FXS, although several ion channel subunits are amongst the genes whose mRNAs are regulated by FMRP. These channels strongly regulate the active properties of dendrites and therefore dendritic information processing. We will probe ion channel dysfunction and its consequences for dendritic function in layer 5B pyramidal neurons of the whisker-related barrel cortex.
